The Cost of a Bad Hire

Finding the right person to fulfill a need in your business – maybe something that you’re not that great at and shouldn’t be wasting your precious time on anyway as it isn’t part of your “core genius” – allows you to do more of your core genius and bring your greatest work to the world.

The right person will add significant VALUE to your company… you’ll look back and wonder how you managed without them for so long.

But hiring the WRONG person can drain your productivity and budget.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average cost of each bad hire can equal 30 PERCENT of that person’s annual earnings. For example, the consultant or employee you paid $25,000 would actually end up costing you $32,500 if they don’t work out.

A bad hire – whether it’s a consultant or subcontractor you intend to work with regularly or someone you hire as an employee - can negatively affect your budget and, the rest of your team’s morale – if you already have a team.

Some Reasons Why A Bad Hire is a Bad Idea…

Getting Them Started - When you first bring on a consultant or an employee, you spend time and money to get them up to speed. If the person never catches on and has to be let go, these expenses, added to their fee or salary, represent LOST COSTS. Lost costs may include training hours that could have been devoted elsewhere.

Recruiting – The amount of time and money you spend pursuing, interviewing, screening and making offers to candidates can NEVER BE RECOVERED. There’s your salary, cost of advertising, hours spent reviewing resumes, time lost conducting interviews, and days training the new hire.

Slowdown in Productivity – A bad hire can prove horrendous as YOU must stop your “core genius” REVENUE-PRODUCING work, and take on additional responsibilities. The result is lost efficiency (and, if you have a team,  dissatisfaction by your team that can lead to additional turnover.)

Did you know the average company takes three years of five people working full time to turn a profit?

Having a 5-Person Team – Minimum –
is Critical To Your Success

Your job is to focus on your core genius – the tasks and duties most suited to your innate talents and abilities, and delegate the rest. Until at least 80 percent of your work time is spent in the genius zone, doing what you do best, you’ll struggle needlessly and block your path to success.

Can you imagine Oprah, whose net worth is estimated at $3.5 billion dollars, ever wasting her time doing work not connected to her core genius? Of course not. How successful do you think she would have been without a team to support her? She highlights this need for support in the quote:

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

The problem is you don’t know another way unless:

• One of your parents was a successful entrepreneur and role model, or you’ve been mentored and surrounded by friends who are.

• You learned the necessary skills by working in an entrepreneurial environment.

• Or you’ve run a successful business with a team for awhile. (Congrats if this is you!)


If not, you’re probably still trying to do too much yourself - leading to overwhelm and burnout. Further undermining your achievements, you probably also undercharge so you have limited resources to hire the help you need.

Unfortunately, unless you identify why you’re so fearful of taking a risk and what you need to do to change this, you can stay in this loop for years – or decades - and never move your business forward.

Why Would You Do This?

(Brace yourself for some hard truths…but it’s not all your fault and you can change!)

• You’re cheap with yourself and cheap with your business. Women, much more than men, are notorious for using their own money to fund their businesses, and often loathe to take out a loan or acquire investors. This unwillingness to take any kind of risk can be an enormous setback in achieving real results.

• You won’t raise your prices and just sell, sell, sell. Most female entrepreneurs love to buy, but hate to sell. If this resonates, ask yourself if you’re still trying to be the “good girl,” and if getting approval is more important to you than being successful. You may – consciously or unconsciously - believe you’ll be perceived as power-hungry and greedy (i.e. not feminine) if you want more which, by the way, IS NOT TRUE.

• You are a Stress Monster Control Freak - The DREADED MICRO-MANAGER or BITCH BOSS (cue horror movie music…) who makes everyone around you miserable. Everything has to be done your way. (You may want approval but don’t care so much when it comes to “the help.”)

• You lose your cool with people you hire and boss them around – a big No-No. (But don’t be too hard on yourself – it comes from the fear of losing control.)

• You’ve never considered it important enough to have training on hiring, managing and successfully utilizing a team as you don’t realize just its importance to your goals. The SINGLE most expensive thing companies can do – literally the difference between success and failure – is HIRE the WRONG people. Or put the RIGHT people in charge of the WRONG tasks.

• You haven’t had working with a team successfully modeled for you so you don’t know how to powerfully leverage one to effectively help you with your business.

Let’s Talk About Human Design Type and Your Team

Once you run your human design chart, you will discover your “type.”
Your human design type reveals how the physical energy of your body interacts with your environment and the other people in it.

Let’s take a quick look at what your type could mean for your team set up:
● As a Projector, it’s best if you have a Generator or two or three to help you implement your ideas. You do best as part of a team. Projectors, as a group, are chronically bitter trying to be “solo-preneurs.” It does not work. You cannot fulfill your purpose without the help of others and do your best work guiding teams for efficiency and success. In order for this to happen, you have to regularly mingle with Generators rather than isolating and judging those around you as incompetent, incapable or inferior.

● Generators and Manifesting Generators (henceforth described simply as “Generators”) ~ With so much energy for doing, it’s easy to get scattered and overwhelmed. Generators need guidance - primarily from Projectors to streamline their energy. It’s very good to have a “Projector” guide on your team to point you in the right direction, focusing on essential tasks and eliminating or delegating the rest.

● Manifestors ~ As a Manifestor, you are the boss. You carry an energy that is impactful and can push others away. By informing people of your plans, you reduce the resistance around you. You’ll need a solid team of Generators and Manifesting Generators to carry out your plans.

● As a Reflector, your most powerful role is the “sage” to a team. You “reflect” on the health of the community no matter your actual work - which could be in the arts, coaching, medicine, etc. Your greatest gift is to alert the rest of the team to dangers, threats, opportunities and breakthroughs. You see clearly where things are on course and where things need improvement. You help the owners of a company avoid serious challenges and liabilities by heading off problems before they become “situations.”

At the “Team On Purpose” event, we will explore how your type interacts with other types more deeply and we will also look at your specific human design chart so you know how to set up your own team.

For example, you might be a Generator whose “desk work” is content creation. Who are the other people you need on your team to make sure that content gets out to the right audience?

Or, you might be a Manifestor whose “desk work” is sales and you need others to handle the content, the marketing, the strategy and so on.
